Ein völlig neuer Hoffmann wurde in Lyon gezeigt. Deshalb wurde die Oper auch umbenannt in "Nach Geschichten Hoffmanns". Die Inszenierung spielte sich in einem Bild ab, Gasthaus und Gondeln sollte man vergeblich suchen. Vielleicht sollten die Gestalten, die sich aus den weißen Seitenwänden drücken wollten das lebendig werdende Bild der Mutter Antonias symbolisieren, vielleicht waren es aber auch nur böse Geister, die vom Bösen gerufen wurden. Weite Teile des Originals wurden weggelassen, etwa der Epilog, die Spiegelarie, Teile des Duetts Olympia/Hoffmann und die Eingangsarie des Hoffmann zum Antonia-Akt. Dafür wurde das Barcarole-Thema im Guilietta-Akt wiederholt. Die Aufführung wurde bereits im Fernsehen gezeigt, ist aber auch auf Video/LaserDisc erhältlich (Pioneer-LaserDisc PLMCB 00931)

A completely new Hoffman was given in Lyon That is why they renamed the opera "Tales after Hoffmann". Ths staging took place in only one room and there was nothing to see of the inn or the gondoliers. Perhaps the creatures, who tried to press themselves out of the white sidewalls, should symbolize the picture of Antonia's mother, that became alive, perhaps they were but only evil ghosts, who felt the call of evil. Many parts of the original were left out so there was no epilog, no mirror-aria, parts of the duo Olympia/Hoffmann were cut off and the entrance-aria of Hoffmann to the Antonia-act were deleted. Therefor the Barcarole-theme in the Guilietta-Act was being television but is also available on video/LaserDisc (Pioneer-LaserDisc PLMCB 00931)
