Die Rolle der Mimi ist eine Paraderolle von Barbara Hendricks, die sie bereits zu verschiedensten Anlässen gesungen hat. 1988 wurde einer der wohl schönsten Opernfilme aller Zeiten unter der Regie von Luigi Comencini in den Cinecittà-Studios in Italien gedreht. Produzent war damals Daniel Toscan du Plantier. Hatte beim Soundtrack noch José Carreras die Rolle des Rodolfo gesungen, so mußte er durch seine damalige Krankheit bei den anschließenden Dreharbeiten durch Luca Canonici ersetzt werden. Leider ist der Film bisher noch nicht auf Video veröffentlicht worden.
Im November 1993 sang Barbara die Mimi konzertant in Arhus, Aalborg und Copenhagen um im Mai 1997 brillierte sie im Operhaus von Lyon erneut mit GiacomoPuccini's berühmteste Oper, die dort zehn mal aufgeführt wurde.
The character of Mimi is one of the very best of Barbara Hendricks, who has sung her on various occasions. In 1988 one of the most beautiful opera-movies of all times was made under the direction of Luigi Comencini at the Cinecittà-Studios in Italy. Producer was Daniel Toscan du Plantier. Had José Carreras sung the role of Rodolfo for the soundtrack, for the shootings he had to be replaced by Luca Canonici because of his illness at that time. Unfortunately the movie has not yet been released on video so far.
In November 1993 Barbara sang Mimi in Arhus, Aalborg and Copenhagen in a concert-version and in May 1997 she made again excellent performances at the operhouse of Lyon of Giacomo Puccini's most famous opera, who was given there ten times.

Schöne Bühnenbilder dominierten diese Inszenierung in Lyon, wenngleich die Szenerie insgesamt etwas dunkel gehalten wurde. Von zeitlos jugendlicher Schönheit war Barbara Hendricks Gesang und Ausstrahlung die in Greg Fedderly einen sympatischen jungen Tenor als Partner hatte.
Beautiful stage-designs dominated this staging in Lyon, although the scenery was held a bit dark all in all. Of timeless youthful beauty was Barbara Hendricks from her looks and her voice who had in Greg Fedderly a sympathetic young tenor as partner.
In der kalten Mansarde leben der Dichter Rodolfo und der Maler Marcel frierend und hungernd. Glücklicherweise kommt der Musiker Schaunard mit etwas Geld vorbei und kann sie zum Café einladen. Den lästige Hauswirt, der die Miete eintreiben will, kann man abschütteln. Während die Freunde vorausgehen, bleibt Rodolfo, um noch einen Zeitungsaufsatz zu beenden, wird aber unterbrochen vom Klopfen der hübschen Nachbarin Mimi, deren Kerze erloschen ist. Als sie ihren Zimmerschlüssel bei Rodolfo vergißt und zurückkommt, löscht er wie unabsichtlich das Licht und hilft ihr suchen. Ihre Hände treffen sich und sie verlieben sich auf der Stelle. Mimi erklärt sich bereit, mit ihm zu den Freunden ins Café zu gehen.
In the cold attic live the poet Rodolfo and the painter Marcello freezing and starving. Fortunately the musician Schaunard is dropping by with some money and can invite them to the café. The troublesome landlord, who wants to collect the rent, is easy to get rid of. While the friends leave for the café, Rodolfo stays, to finish a newspaper article, but is interrupted by the knocking of the lovely neighbour Mimi, whose candle faded away. When she forgets her keys at Rodolfo's room and returns, he put out the light like by mistake and helps her searching. Their hands meet and they fall in love immediately. Mimi agrees to go out with him to meet the friends at the café.

Der zweite Akt zeigt reges Treiben im Quartier Latin vor dem Café Mommus. Virginie Pochon bietet eine recht gute Musetta,
die aber etwas flatterhafter hätte sein können. Interessant die Umsetzung der Patrouille, die schwarze Schatten auf den roten
Vorhang wirft, als sie die Bühne durchschreitet.

Musetta, who could have been a little wilder. Interesting the staging of the partouille, who threw black shadows on the red
curtain, as it passes the stage.
La Bohème, Act 3
Das dunkelste Bild dieser Inszenierung - hier in einem wunderschönen dunklen Blau gehalten: Die Zollschranke und Kneipe am Rand der Stadt. Rodolfo verrät, Marcel, daß er weiß, daß Mimi todkrank sei und er sie verlassen wolle, da er sie nicht leiden sehen könne. Mimi, die alles mit anhörte, kommt aus ihrem Versteck und Rodolfo schließt sie erschüttert in die Arme. Marcel und Musetta kommen streitend aus der Kneipe. Auch in dieser Inszenierung war das berühmte Quartett ein Hochgenuß.
The darkest picture of this staging - here held in a wonderful dark blue: the customs barrier and the inn at the border of the city. Rodolfo reveals to Marcel, that he know, the Mimi is fatally ill and that he wants to leave her, as he can not stand it to see her suffer. Mimi, who hears all this, come out of her hideaway and Rodolfo
takes her in his arms deeply moved. Marcel and Musetta are leaving the inn heavily arguing. In this staging, too, the famous quartett is brilliant highlight.
La Bohème, Act 4
Wieder in der Mansarde. Die Freunde haben sich von den Geliebten getrennt und sind trotz Armut guter Dinge, sind zu Späßen auferlegt bis Musetta hereingestürzt kommt und Mimi hereinführt, die ein letztes Mal Rodolfo sehen will. Die Freunde holen einen Arzt und wollen Stücke verkaufen, damit Mimi noch einmal etwas Freude hat. Rodolfo und Mimi - nun alleine - gedenken noch einmal der schönen Stunden. Im Beisein aller Freunde schläft Mimi ein und stirbt. Rodolfo bricht über ihrem Bett weinend zusammen.
Das schönste Stück in diesem Akt ist das Duett "Sono andati" (Sind wir alleine?), das noch einmal alle zärtliche Schönheit von Puccinis Musik darbietet.
Back in the attic. The friends have seperated from their lovers and are still happy and in a good mood despite poverty until Musetta rushes in, along with Mimi, who wants to see Rodolfo one last time. The friends are leaving for a doctor and to sell something for making Mimi a little pleasure. Rodolfo and Mimi - now alone - remember once more the beautiful hours they have had. In the company of all friends Mimi falls asleep and dies. Rodolfo breaks down over her bed crying. The most beautiful piece in this act is the duo "Sono andati" (Are we alone now?), which includes once more all the tender beauty of Puccini's music.
