AN EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH EMI

The first collaboration of EMI with Barbara HENDRICKS took place in 1978 during the recording of VERDI Don Carlos conducted by Herbert von KARAJAN. Barbara, at the very beginning of her international career, was singing the small part of the Voice from Heaven at the end of the Autodafé act.

Foreseeing the enormous artistic potential of this singer, PATHÉ MARCONI offered Barbara HENDRICKS two recital recordings in 1983: one of Negro Spirituals" (the sales of which have exceeded 100 000 copies) with Dmitri ALEXEEV at the piano, and one of DEBUSSY melodies accompanied by Michel BEROFF.

Thus, since the beginning, the general pattern of our recording policy with Barbara HENDRICKS was being clearly outlined: to record melody cycles accompanied by famous pianists well known for their affinity with the composer. The following recording - SCHUBERT Lieder with Radu LUPU confirmed this choice.

At the same time, Barbara HENDRICKS recorded 2 MOZART recitals with onchestra: "Concert and Opera arias" with Jeffrey TATE conducting the English Chamber Orchestra, and "Sacred Arias" with Sir Neville MARRINER conducting the Academy of St-Martin in the Fields.

She also took part in several important recordings for our label: the Requiem by FAURE with Jose van DAM and Michel PLASSON, the Messe de Sainte Cecile by GOUNOD, the Stabat Mater by POULENC with Georges PRETRE, the 5th Bachianas Brasileiras by VILLA-LOBOS.

Wishing to continue and expand this relationship, Barbara HENDRICKS just signed an exclusive contract with EMI for all her recitals. The first title of this contract, recorded in October 1988, will be internationally released in January: it consists of melodies by RAVEL (Sheherezade,Cinq Melodies Populaires Grecques, Vocalise en Forme de Habanera, Deux Melodies Hebreiques) and 6 melodies by DUPARC with the Orchestre de l'Opera de Lyon conducted by John Eliot GARDINER.

In the forthcoming months Barbara will be recording Cantatas by BACH with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw conducted by Peter SCHREIER, melodies by FAURÉ with by Michel DALBERTO, melodies by MOZART with by Maria Joao PIRES.

Apart from recitals, Barbara HENDRICKS will sing in several opera recordings: Leila from BIZET's Les Pecheurs de Perles conducted by Michel PLASSON, Antigone from ENESCO's Oedipe conducted by Lawrence FOSTER, Eurydice from GLUCK 's Orphee & Eurydice conducted John Eliot GARDINER, Sandmann in HUMPERDINCK's Hänsel & Gretel conducted by Jeffrey TATE, Sophie in R. STRAUSS' Rosenkavalier conducted by Lorin MAAZEL.

Barbara HENDRICKS will then participate in several other EMI recordings : the Gloria by POULENC with Georges PRETRE (already recorded), vocal works by CHABRIER with Michel PLASSON, Masses by HAYDN with Sir Neville MARRINER, Carmina Burana by Carl ORFF with Franz WELSER-MöST.

EIN EXKLUSIV-VERTRAG MIT EMI

Die erste Zusammenarbeit von EMI mit Barbara HENDRICKS fand 1978 bei den Aufnahmen zu VERDI 's Don Carlos unter Herbert von KARAJAN statt. Barbara, die ganz am Anfang ihrer internationalen Karriere stand, hatte den kleinen Part der Stimme vom Himmel am Ende des Autodafe-Aktes zu singen.

Das enorme künstlerische Potential dieser Sängerin vorhersehend, offerierte PATHE MARCONI Barbara HENDRICKS zwei Recital-Aufnahmen im Jahre 1983: eines mit "Negro Spirituals" (die Verkaufszahlen belaufen sich inzwischen auf 100.000 Kopien) mit Dmitri ALEXEEV am Piano und eine mit Melodien von DEBUSSY begleitet von Michel BEROFF.

Somit wurde das generelle Muster unserer Aufnahme-Politik mit Barbara HENDRICKS seit Beginn an klar herausgehoben: Melodie-Zyklusse mit berühmten Pianisten aufzunehmen, die bekannt für ihre Affinität mit dem Komponisten sind. Die nachfolgende Aufnahme - SCHUBERT Lieder mit Radu LUPU - bestätigten diese Wahl.
